The product smartLED 1216 with remote control and receiver was developed and launched on the market as a plug-and-play kit. Customer-specific cutting to length turned out to be a best seller right from the beginning. The company was able to move to its first business premises at Markthallenstrasse 31 in Sargans covering a floor space of around 60 m2 and accommodating the storage room, manufacturing stations and the office. On 3 March 2009, smarterion ag was founded by Reto Bonderer, Thomas and Peter Stepan; Thomas Stepan started to work for the company as an employee. The company was established based on the product development by Peter Stepan and the associated business plan prepared by Reto Bonderer and Thomas Stepan.
2010
The acquisition of a CNC flatbed milling machine for processing large plastic panels allowed to open up new business areas, enabling the development of products such as smartPanel, but also customer-specific covers that could now be manfactured in-house. In September, a showroom was set up in Schindellegi, in collaboration with Leone GmbH (today Archimondo AG), to present the products of smarterion ag to the customers and to hold project meetings. On 1 February, the first staff member for production and assembly was hired.
2011
On 1 July 2011, the company moved to the newly completed production building at Rheinaustrasse 3 in Sargans, which was built by Stepan Engineering GmbH. The generous spatial conditions now also allowed large-scale orders to be manufactured. Here, an order for the Court of Appeal in Zurich must be mentioned that was implemented in collaboration with Zumtobel, which evolved into a long-standing partnership.
2012
Due to the increasing order volume, more space was required at the company’s headquarters at Rheinaustrasse. An add-on to the building was planned and implemented quickly, which opened up new opportunities on 150 square meters of additional floor space. The acquisition of a section folding machine allowed for the first time to offer not only linear or wide-area luminaires, but also circular or curved sections – depending on customer demands.
2013
The commissioning of an encapsulation line designed in-house for linear profiles represented a milestone in outdoor lighting. Professionally enscapsulated sections became best sellers within a very short time and were highly appreciated by the customers for their extreme robustness. Thanks to the latest technology, 3D data visualisation could now also be offered to the customers. This allowed highly accurate views directly at the construction site, so that curved sections could be fitted to optimum effect. The subsidiary smarterion Austria GmbH was established with a view to business in neighbouring European countries. Now it was possible for customers within the EU area to be served directly.
2014
In 2014, smarterion celebrated its 5-year anniversary with a special event. The newly designed image brochure illustrates the values and opportunities offered by smarterion as a supplier of linear and special luminaires. A letter of intent (LOI) established even closer collaboration with the companies Zumtobel Licht AG and Neuco AG. The in-house know-how in section folding was utilised to develop the smartBulk product family. In order to cope with the ever-increasing order volume, another extension was added to the production hall. The extension building, put into operation in summer, provided additional space for the requirements of mechanical production.
2015
The acquisition of a bending press for metal sheets with a length of 2.5 m and also of a YAG laser allowed for the in-house manufacture of sheet metal parts for special luminaire production for the first time in the company’s history. In order to optimise the capacity of the plants, the product smartLine Easy was developed, which turned out to be an immediate market success and laid the foundation of the new serial luminaires production department. Both smartLED 6050/7050 and the VANOR/VANOC series of designer luminaires were introduced at the 2015 Ineltec in Basle. Moreover, a web shop for section configuration was presented to the public for the first time, making it easier for customers to obtain offers and place orders.
2016
Moving to the newly rented 750 m2 of production space at the Langgraben location allowed the installation of the fully automated AMADA sheet metal laser, including a tower with automatic exchange function. This acquisition allowed adding the smartLIne Easy and ICE LED EVO products to the serial luminaires segment. For the first time, it was possible to produce some 30,000 luminaires. By transferring the mechanical production department to the new location, there was sufficient space now at the Rheinaustrasse headquarters to create an attractive reception area with office premises. In the course of ISO-9001 certification, the workflows of the entire company were checked and optimised. Another audit by Osram not only confirmed our goal of providing «top quality – made in Switzerland», but also showed further potential. We were able to negotiate exclusive agreements for Switzerland with the new suppliers MGL Licht and Osmont. With immediate effect, smarterion now represents these companies in Switzerland.
2017
In order to enhance the quality of the smarterion products even further, the results obtained from the audit by Osram were adopted and prioritised. The result was a unique testing facility that went into operation early in [year], where serial luminaires can be tested speedily, in compliance with standards, also using a Vision system, and documentation can be provided. The foundation of the in-house production system smartProduction was laid early in [year]. The fact that the electrical wholesaler Elektro-Material (EM) distributed the smarterion-specific catalogue smartLighting to all its customers all over Switzerland, marked a milestone in the history of smarterion ag in the sphere of commercial products. In order to present the increasingly varied product range of smarterion ag to a wider audience, the company set up its own trade fair stand at Ineltec 2017 in Basle.
2018
The new production site at Zeughausstrasse 10 in Mels was put into operation at the beginning of [year]. By commissioning the new DEMAK encapsulating machine, the outdoor product range could be extended on a professional level. Thanks to the rapid further development of the smartProduction system, the latter could be implemented with Küttel AG. This company now manufactures smart-LED sections in compliance with the smarterion standard based on a franchise.
2019
10-year anniversary of smarterion ag: The year of the tenth anniversary of the company was marked by growth and transformation. In spring, the entire property on Zeughausstrasse in Mels was rented. This allowed an extension of the production lines and making them fit for the future in terms of process technology. A new CNC milling machine for plastic panels was added to the mechanical production department, in order to further strengthen the special luminaires business segment. Upon implementation of the web shop for section configuration on the website of the wholesaler Elektro Material, the web shop is now available to more than 3,800 electricians.
